The department of the Dordogne is the third largest French department in terms of size. It is part of the Aquitaine region. The department of dordogne was created on 4 March 1790 (French Revolution) on a part of the former Perigord province. With an area of 9,060 sq. km and a population of approximately 401,000 inhabitants (2006). The population density is 44 inhabitants per sq. km and the urbanization rate is 48%.

THE 4 PERIGORD
The administrative borders of the Dordogne department are combined with those of the former historic Perigord.
To the North and North-East lies the Limousin, to the West the Gironde and Charentes, the Agenais to the south and Quercy to the South-East.
The Dordogne territory falls midway between the ocean and the Massif Central; such a transitional position gives it a temperate climate.
To the North, the Périgord Vert is a true haven of greenery and rolling hills crisscrossed by streams and rivers (Dronne, Bandiat, Auvézère, high valley of the Isle).
At the center, from West to East, Périgord Blanc is the country of plateaus and wide valleys of grasslands (Isle Auvézère).
The Black Périgord, named because of the density of its forests of oak trees, occupies the South-East quarter of the Dordogne. Consisting of beautiful landscapes, punctuated by numerous castles (Beynac, Castelnaud, Fénelon), villages and well-preserved world-famous prehistoric sites (Lascaux, Les Eyzies ...), it dominates the valleys of the Vézère and Dordogne rivers.
The Bergerac region was named the Purple Perigord, in reference to its famous vineyards.
It is also the country of Montaigne, bastides, and tobacco.
