Our department is one of the most visited in France, and there are good reasons to it: it is said that the Dordogne hosts 1,000 chateaux of which the most well known are the feudal fortresses of Beynac, Commarque, the chateaux of L'Herm, Les Milandes. Famous bastides, and 9 of France's most beautiful villages also stand close to Sarlat: Belvès, Beynac et Cazenac, Domme, Limeuil, Monpazier, Laroque-Gageac, St-Amand de Coly, St Jean de Côle and St Léon sur Vézère.
Numerous touristic prehistoric sites, such as the Lascaux cave in Montignac, or the Combarelles and Font de Gaume caves in Les Eyzies de Tayac also add to the incredible attractivity of this department.
Hereunder is a map of some of the most interesting spots to be visited in the area.
